| It's hard to believe
that only a few short years ago, Eli Rix was working alongside
migrant farmers and collecting 12 cents an hour for picking
raspberries. These days, Mr. Rix is more likely to be
giving the raspberries to heartless politicians and greedy
business tycoons - but only those who are not willing
to underwrite his unorthodox research experiments in bending
the laws of time and space. A noted designer and fashion
historian, Eli also owns and operates Threadbare, one
of Kalamazoo's most exclusive boutiques, specializing
in the latest styles of parachute pants, Members Only
jackets and "Keep On Truckin'" T-shirts. Eli
is working on his doctorate in post-ironic feminist criticism
at Climax Community College, a pursuit that permits him
to watch lots of Julia Roberts movies, including his all-time
favorite, "Stepmom," which he insists in his
thesis is "the greatest achievement of bourgeois
anti-didactic cinema ever produced by American artists." |
